Make a Difference

  • Trap

Our volunteer, Bruce, makes tunnel boxes with T-rex rat traps for $20 each. To buy one, make an online payment to Predator Free Tamahere (ASB 12-3268-0077969-00) and pick it up at the Waikato District Council Tamahere office hub (Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm) by the Tamahere pharmacy.

Tamahere properties can borrow a Flipping Timmy possum trap for free, funded by Waikato Regional Council. Contact us to check eligibility.

For hard-to-reach areas like gullies or steep river edges, consider the NZ Autotrap AT220, which auto-resets and targets possums, rats, and mice. Check out our latest info on tips on using the AT220.

  • Bait

When using poison rat bait, place it in secure bait stations (sold locally) to prevent rats from storing it and non-target animals from accessing it. First generation baits, such as Diphacinone (Ditrac), are safer around pets. For best results, use a “pulsing” approach by placing bait only at certain times of the year, not all the time. This stops rats from eating more bait than needed, cuts costs, and keeps rats from getting used to the bait.

Check out our latest updates for detailed info on pulsing bait. For additional resources, check out Predator Free NZ’s lifestyle block pest control guide. If you have any questions or need advice, feel free to reach out to us!

  • Donate

Help us reach our goal by donating a trap today! With Give A Trap, it’s simple to contribute, and each donation brings us closer to a predator-free Tamahere. Read more about this in our project updates.

  • Volunteer

Whether you can check weekly traplines, assist with community events, help with fundraising, or simply encourage your neighbours to get involved, there’s a way for everyone to help. If you can spare just an hour or want to get more deeply involved, we’d love to hear from you!
