In The Beginning

Predator Free Tamahere came into being in mid-2022 when a few Tamahere locals gathered around a kitchen table for a cup of tea and a chat. Driven by a desire to see Tamahere gullies flourish, we figured that predator control was critical to improving the ecological health of the flora and fauna of the area.

While countless conversations have taken place since our first kitchen table meeting, our strategy was formally developed in the summer of 2022/23 over two facilitated workshops. We’re grateful to Waikato Regional Council for their support of this process.

We know we’ve got a big task ahead of us. Given this, we’re committed to ‘sticking to our knitting’ - animal predator control – while knowing there are lots of other passionate people who will have a shared focus on improving the ecological health of Tamahere and beyond. We look forward to working with them.

Our strategy is to focus on:

1: Strong, connected and enduring community relationships

2: Tamahere gullies and reserves and the Waikato River edge are our priorities

3: Tangible positive impact on our environment
